An Exclusive GreenSignature™ Interview on Leadership, Psychological Safety and Human Sustainability

ONGC Petro Additions Ltd. (OPaL), one of India’s largest integrated petrochemical complexes, has been awarded the GreenSignature Mindful WorkSpace Certification 2025 . The recognition places OPaL among progressive, people-centred workplaces, aligning with global culture expectations often associated with Great Place to Work, CultureAmp, Lattice, Gallup and Energage.

This interview has been conducted by the GreenSignature editorial team and features insights from Amit Kaul, Head – HR , and acknowledges the contribution of key leaders Dr Bhaumik Acharya, Suvendu Senapati and Chintan Trivedi, whose continued focus on employee well-being, operational excellence and psychological safety has shaped OPaL’s journey toward becoming a Mindful WorkSpace.

Leadership Vision and Organisational Culture

Embedding Mindfulness in High-Stakes Operations

GreenSignature Team: OPaL operates in a high-stakes, technology-intensive environment. What inspired the leadership to embed mindfulness and psychological safety into such a large industrial ecosystem?

Amit Kaul: We believe world-class petrochemical performance is driven not only by technology, but also by clarity, resilience and collaboration. Mindfulness helps sharpen focus and emotional balance; psychological safety ensures people feel comfortable speaking up. In an environment like ours, where decisions impact safety and production on a daily basis, calm thinking and open communication are not optional – they are critical.

When employees know they can share concerns without fear, they participate more fully in problem-solving. That directly strengthens innovation, risk management and operational stability.

Redefining Workplace Dignity Through Mindful Practices

GreenSignature Team: The phrase “Mindful WorkSpace” goes beyond wellness. How do you interpret it at OPaL?

Amit Kaul: For us, a mindful workspace means a place where dignity, respect and clarity guide everyday decisions. It is not limited to yoga sessions or workshops – it is about how people feel when they enter the workplace, how they are treated, how they are heard, and whether they feel psychologically safe.

When employees know that their voice counts, teams become naturally stronger. Performance improves not because of pressure, but because people feel accountable and valued.

Human Sustainability as a Leadership Priority

GreenSignature Team: How do you describe “human sustainability” in the context of OPaL’s leadership approach?

Amit Kaul: Human sustainability means building a workforce that is skilled, emotionally steady and resilient – not just compliant. We complement advanced technology with people-centred policies and systems. This includes comprehensive medical support, accident cover, PoSH implementation, structured leave and shift practices, and recognition frameworks.

Colleagues such as Dr Bhaumik Acharya, Suvendu Senapati and Chintan Trivedi have played important roles in nurturing this balance between discipline and care. The idea is simple: if we invest in our people’s stability and dignity, we protect the long-term stability of the organisation.

Employee Wellness and Mental Health Initiatives

A Holistic Wellness System

GreenSignature Team: OPaL has implemented a wide range of wellness initiatives. Which programmes have had the most visible impact on employee morale and performance?

Amit Kaul: Rather than one standout initiative, it is the combination that has made the difference. CPR training has improved preparedness and confidence. Ergonomic screenings have reduced discomfort and clinic visits. Mindfulness and stress-management workshops have increased awareness around burnout and fatigue.

Together, these programmes have helped employees feel more energised, supported and secure. That uplift in morale and resilience is visible on the shop floor and in everyday interactions.

Ensuring Psychological Safety in High-Pressure Environments

GreenSignature Team: How do you ensure employees feel safe enough to express stress or seek mental health support in such a demanding environment?

Amit Kaul: We encourage dialogue through town halls, group discussions and confidential one-to-one interactions. Employees have access to counselling support and mental-health specialists. Our medical centre conducts regular physical and mental wellness assessments, which enable early identification of stress-related issues.

We also promote anonymous feedback channels. The message is clear – asking for help is not a weakness. It is a responsible step, and the organisation is here to support it.

Measuring the Real Impact of EAPs and Support Systems

GreenSignature Team: How do you evaluate whether these wellness and counselling systems are genuinely effective?

Amit Kaul: We look at both sentiment and data. On the qualitative side, we collect employee feedback through surveys and informal conversations. On the quantitative side, we monitor trends – such as reductions in stress-linked OPD visits, fewer fatigue-related incidents, and improved willingness to use counselling services.

When employees begin to seek help earlier, show improved well-being and bring more of themselves to work, we know that our interventions are working.

Policy, Inclusion and Leadership Practices

Balancing Discipline with Dignity

GreenSignature Team: Manufacturing often requires strict discipline. How do you balance this with dignity and inclusion?

Amit Kaul: Discipline is essential for safe operations, but it must be fair and predictable. We maintain transparent shift policies and clear leave frameworks so employees can plan their personal lives responsibly. Leaders are encouraged to be approachable and to listen actively.

Our wellness support, medical services and counselling reinforce that operational discipline does not mean emotional rigidity. Employees should feel safe, heard and respected while meeting performance expectations.

Mental Well-Being as a Strategic Business Priority

GreenSignature Team: How do HR and leadership work together to keep mental well-being at the core of business strategy?

Amit Kaul: Mental well-being is treated as a strategic matter. Senior leaders participate in wellness campaigns and stress-management programmes to demonstrate that these initiatives are for everyone. HR then integrates the principles of psychological safety into policies, training and operational processes.

This shared ownership between HR and leadership ensures that well-being is not an isolated activity but part of how we run the organisation.

Managerial Sensitisation to Prevent Burnout

GreenSignature Team: How are managers trained or sensitised to recognise and prevent burnout while maintaining productivity?

Amit Kaul: Managers receive regular sensitisation through shop-floor discussions, awareness sessions and leadership communications. They are encouraged to watch for early signs of strain, adapt workloads where possible, and model healthy work habits themselves.

The focus is on achieving performance in a way that does not compromise the long-term health of our people.

The Broader Vision and Industrial Impact

A Certification That Strengthens Employer Trust

GreenSignature Team: What does the GreenSignature Mindful WorkSpace Certification mean for OPaL’s employer brand and stakeholder trust?

Amit Kaul: The certification reinforces our commitment to ethical leadership, transparent culture and resilient workforce development. It signals to employees, partners and stakeholders that our focus on psychological safety and well-being is genuine, structured and independently assessed through an evidence-based GreenSignature framework .

A Message for Industrial Employers

GreenSignature Team: What message would you share with other large-scale employers who are still at the early stages of adopting mindful workplace frameworks?

Amit Kaul: A calm, focused and emotionally steady employee is essential for operational excellence. Mindful workplace systems are not an add-on – they are vital for safe, sustainable and reliable operations. It is better to start small and stay consistent than to wait for the perfect moment.

What Lies Ahead

GreenSignature Team: Looking ahead, what is next for OPaL in its journey of psychological safety and mindful leadership?

Amit Kaul: We intend to deepen our focus on emotional support, leadership empathy and continuous skill development. Our long-term vision is a workforce that is confident, safe, emotionally supported and ready for the future. When we invest in the mind behind the machine, everything else follows.

Closing Reflection

OPaL’s culture is grounded in collaboration, mutual respect and empathy. As Amit Kaul reflects, every leadership decision must be evaluated by the positive impact it creates on people – the true heart of industrial excellence.

Ready to Put Psychological Safety and Transparency at the Centre of Your Workplace?

Organisations across the world are quietly rethinking whether their existing culture labels and badges truly reflect everyday employee reality. Many have worked with global benchmarks like Great Place to Work, CultureAmp, Lattice, Gallup and Energage — yet still sense a gap between survey scores, marketing narratives and what people actually feel on the shop floor or in meeting rooms.

GreenSignature was built for leaders who are serious about that gap. Our Mindful WorkSpace Certification is an independent, evidence-based framework designed by mental health, workplace and assessment professionals. It goes beyond branding to examine how safe people feel to speak up, how consistently policies are experienced, and how psychological safety, dignity and trust show up in daily decisions — not just in policy documents or annual reports.

If you are a decision-maker who asks tough questions, challenges buzzwords and does not want “just another label”, Mindful WorkSpace is designed for you. It gives you:

  • A structured, transparent assessment of psychological safety and workplace culture
  • Actionable insights instead of generic feel-good scores
  • A credible, human-centred alternative to purely marketing-driven certifications
  • A narrative that resonates with employees, boards and external stakeholders alike
